How to find your passion in life

I sat in traffic and wondered how much more of my life that I was going to waste.

There are not too many feelings that are worse than the feeling that you’re wasting your life doing something that you hate.

I spent years and years trying to figure out what I was meant to do.  What were my passions? What should I be doing with my life?

These are tough questions for anyone.  We all struggle with this.

But most of us never try hard enough to figure it out.  We never take enough chances.  We spend most of out time just playing it safe by doing what’s easy and comfortable.

But after years of struggling to find purpose, years of working jobs that I hated…

I discovered my passions.  And you can do the same.

What I realized when I was trying to discover my passions was that its not a specific thing that I was looking for but rather a lifestyle that I was seeking.

in college I used to visit the career counselor almost on a weekly basis. I would ask the counselor, how can I make money and have freedom?

When we are looking for our passions we need to think about what type of lifestyle that we want.

For me I wanted to be in charge of my life. I wanted to create on my own terms and work on my own terms.  I didn’t want a boss telling me what to do. I didn’t want to wake up on Monday mornings and have to go to a 9-5 job.

I wanted to work when I wanted too.  I wanted to take vacations when I wanted. I wanted to be my own boss.  This is what I was passionate about.

So when it comes to finding your passions – figure out what type of lifestyle that you want.  The rest is easy.

Once you figure out the lifestyle that you want – all you have to do from there is try a lot of different things and see what you like.

Are you the type of person that likes to be in charge?  Do you feel happy when you’re being creative? Do you like having structure or a set amount of time to work?

Once you figure out the type of person that you are and the type of lifestyle that you want – then you just need to find a career path or start a business that aligns with that.

Are you someone that likes to take risks or someone that likes security?

I’ve always been more of a risk taker.

Think about if someone wrote a book about your life?

It would be much more interesting with some risk and overcoming obstacles and taking chances (at least that is what I think).

You also want to try as many new things as possible.  Try flight lessons, salsa dancing, martial arts, yoga, photography, etc.

The more exposure that you have to different activities – the more likely you will find something that you really enjoy.  And once you find your passion you can also start a business around that passion.

But one can never find their passion by not taking action.  You cannot discover your passion just from thinking alone – you must take action.

So, say YES to as many things as possible.

Try as many new activities as possible.

Once you do find as passion, you can decide if you want to make money from that passion.  Then you can begin to escape the 9-5 lifestyle.

If you have a passion for freedom and creating the lifestyle that you want (like I did) then escaping the 9-5 is a crucial step.

I will be talking more about how to escape the 9-5 in future posts. So stay tuned.

Talk soon,

Mike
